Text not inserting
Troubleshoot dictated text not appearing in your target app — from permission checks to app compatibility.
Quick checks
Before diving into detailed troubleshooting, verify the basics:
- Is your cursor in a text field? Epilude inserts text wherever your cursor is. Click into a text field first.
- Did you see the dictation indicator? If the indicator didn't appear when you pressed your hotkey, Epilude may not be running. Check the menu bar for the Epilude icon.
- Did the transcription complete? If the indicator appeared but no text was inserted, the issue may be with transcription rather than insertion.
Check Accessibility permission
Epilude needs Accessibility access to insert text into other apps. This is the most common cause of insertion failures.
Open System Settings
Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
Find Epilude in the list
Ensure Epilude is listed and the toggle is on.
If Epilude isn't listed
Drag Epilude from your Applications folder into the Accessibility list, or re-launch Epilude and follow the onboarding prompt.
Toggle not working?
If toggling Accessibility on doesn't help, remove Epilude from the list, quit the app, re-add it, then relaunch. This forces macOS to re-register the permission.
Re-grant after macOS update
macOS updates can silently reset Accessibility and Microphone permissions. If Epilude stopped working after an OS update:
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility
- Remove Epilude from the list (select it and click the − button)
- Quit Epilude from the menu bar
- Re-add Epilude and relaunch the app
App compatibility
Some apps block programmatic text insertion for security reasons. This is rare but can happen with:
- Banking and financial apps
- DRM-protected input fields
- Some Electron-based apps with custom text handling
If text won't insert into a specific app but works everywhere else, try copying your dictation to the clipboard and pasting with ⌘V instead.
Restart Epilude
If none of the above helps:
- Click the Epilude icon in the menu bar
- Select Quit
- Relaunch Epilude from Applications or Spotlight
Still not working?
If you've tried everything above and text still isn't inserting, reach out for help. Include your macOS version, Epilude version, and the name of the app where insertion fails.
