Keeping Epilude up to date

Epilude updates itself. New versions download in the background and install at a moment when you are not using your Mac, and the app restarts on its own. The first you see of a release is a small Updated to notice in the corner of the window, after the update has landed, with a link to what changed.

What happens during an update

1. Epilude checks for a new version every few hours while it is running, and each time you bring it to the front.
2. If there is one, it downloads in the background. Nothing appears on screen. On a metered or low-data connection, the download waits for Wi-Fi.
3. Once the download is ready, Epilude waits for a quiet moment: at least a minute without you touching the keyboard or mouse, or the screen asleep or locked.
4. Epilude quits, installs the new version, and reopens. This takes a second or two. A small notice in the corner of the screen says Epilude is updating while it happens, because your dictation hotkey does not respond during those seconds.
5. An Updated to notice appears in the bottom-right corner of the Epilude window. Its See what's new link opens the release notes; the close button dismisses it. If you were in another app, the notice waits until the next time you come back to Epilude.

If a quiet moment never comes (a Mac that is in constant use for a whole day), the sidebar shows Restart to finish updating with a Restart now button. Nothing installs until you click it.

If you quit Epilude while an update is downloaded and waiting, it installs then and is ready the next time you open the app.

What never gets interrupted

Epilude does not restart while you are in the middle of something. An update waits until all of these are finished:

• A dictation, including the moment after you release the key while the text is being cleaned up and inserted
• A held dictation or Actions hotkey
• A meeting that is recording, paused, or being summarised
• A narration that is loading, playing, or paused
• A download of the on-device model, EP-1
• Any open window in Epilude that is waiting for your answer

The same rule applies when you click Update or Restart now yourself: if a meeting is recording, the button is disabled and explains why until the meeting ends.

Seeing what changed

After an update, the Updated to notice in the corner of the window offers See what's new, which opens the release notes for the versions you skipped. Closing the notice without opening them counts as seen; it does not come back for that version.

To read the notes again, or to see earlier versions, choose Epilude → What's New… from the menu bar. The full changelog is also at epilude.com/help/changelog.

To stop the notice from appearing after updates, turn off Show after updates at the bottom of the What's New window. The menu item keeps working.

Turning automatic updates off

1. Open Settings → General.
2. Turn off Install updates automatically.

Epilude then behaves the way it did before: when a new version is available, a card appears at the bottom of the sidebar and a link under the version number in Settings. Click Update Epilude to see the release notes, and Epilude downloads and installs the update while you watch. Nothing downloads until you click.

Turn the setting back on at any time. A version that was already downloaded installs at the next quiet moment.

Checking for updates by hand

Choose Epilude → Check for Updates… from the menu bar. If you are up to date, Epilude says so. If a new version is already downloaded and waiting, this restarts Epilude to install it.

Which version you have

Settings shows the version number at the bottom of its sidebar. Under it, a status line says whether a new version is downloading or waiting for a quiet moment.
