Epilude

Quick selected-text reading, or a dedicated listening library.

Compare Epilude Narrator and Apple Speak Selection for reading aloud on Mac: inputs, voice processing, offline use, libraries and plans.

The short answer
Apple’s Read & Speak tools are a useful free way to hear selected text. Epilude Narrator adds a dedicated reading workflow with imports and a library alongside Dictation and Notetaker. This is a comparison of reading tools, not a replacement for VoiceOver or an accessibility guarantee.

Documentation reviewed September 30, 2026. This is a comparison of documented features, not a hands-on quality benchmark. Plans and availability can change.

Key differences

Start with the reading task

For a paragraph already selected in an app, Speak Selection may be all you need. It has a shortcut, highlighting and a playback controller.

Keep longer reading together

Narrator offers document and link imports in a dedicated library, plus selection and clipboard reading. Not every quick read becomes a saved library item.

Accessibility remains its own job

Apple’s accessibility tools are important in their own right. Choose the workflow that works with your content and assistive setup; Narrator is not a full screen-reader substitute.

Where Apple Speak Selection is the better pick

Use Apple Speak Selection when you mainly hear short selections and want no extra subscription or app. Its highlighting and playback controls already cover that task. Check Accessibility Reader on the macOS version you use.

Choose Epilude if

  • You want local voice generation on Apple Silicon
  • You also use Mac dictation and meeting notes

Choose Apple Speak Selection if

  • You want free selected-text reading already on your Mac
  • You need Apple’s accessibility integration

Writing, meeting notes and reading in one Mac app

Choose where each step runs

Local Dictation needs Apple Silicon; full local AI Cleanup needs 16GB+. Cloud Actions still sends selected text and instructions. Notetaker defaults to cloud transcription and summaries. To keep both local, choose each separately; local summaries need a 16GB+ Apple Silicon Mac and are slower and less capable. Narrator’s EP-1 voice generates speech locally; cloud voices send text. Fetching links uses the network, and web sharing uploads text and audio.

Try each workflow

The trial includes 1,000 dictation words, 10 meeting notes and 5 minutes of cloud narration, with independent allowances, no card and no time limit. Pro is $12/month billed annually ($144/year), including 60 cloud-voice minutes per calendar month. Pay Once is $59 for supported local features on Apple Silicon and includes one year of updates; ongoing cloud use requires a trial or Pro entitlement. Local voice generation is unmetered.
